Review: The Curiosity Files - Blue-Footed Booby

Reviews

We were recently given the chance to review one of The Curiosity Files available from The Old Schoolhouse. We were sent a link to an e-file of the Blue-Footed Booby unit.

As soon as I opened the file, I knew that Robbie would have lots of fun with it. The file is 100 pages and covers many subject areas (as any good unit study should). Math, writing and copywork, spelling, vocabulary, geography, crafts and more are all included in this file.

Since Robbie is only a preschooler, my first task was to view all the pages and print out the ones which were appropriate for him. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many sheets and activities that we could either use or easily modify.

Robbie and I both enjoyed putting together his mini "Curiosity File".

He loved looking at a picture of a Blue-Footed Booby to choose the correct colors for his coloring page.

Overall, we really had a blast with this unit! It was a wonderful addition to our bird week.

This unit includes activities and worksheets for a wide variety of ages and levels, so it would be perfect for a family study. The official ages listed are for 8 - 13 and up, but it was very easy to modify for a preschooler.

Some of the pages include:

Math
Measurement
Word problems
Fact families
Multiplication Facts

Writing
Combining sentences
Writing a story

Spelling & Vocabulary
Word Lists
Spelling activities
Spanish worksheets
Games

... and SO much more! Many of the topics even have two versions, one for elementary and one for junior high/high school.

This product is not secular. If you and your family are not Young Earth Creationists, you will probably need to modify/skip a few parts. I don't see it being a huge issue, though.

This unit is available through The Old Schoolhouse Store (http://www.theoldschoolhousestore.com) and is priced very reasonably at $6.95.

Besides the Blue-Footed Booby unit, you can also find these Curiosity Files in The Old Schoolhouse Store (some priced as low as $1.00):
  • Cicada-Killing Wasp

  • Blue Diamond

  • Dung Beetle

  • MRSA

  • Platypus

  • Puffer Fish

  • Quicksand

  • Red Tide

  • Zombie Fire Ants

This is a thorough and fun study of a creature that we didn't even know existed. I would definitely recommend it if you are studying birds, The Galapagos Islands, or if you're simply looking for something fun and different.
