Robbie's official kindergarten year will begin on September 4th. Here's a run-down of what we'll be using. (If it seems like a lot, remember that not everything will be used every day and we have a whole year to cover it all.)

Bible Stories and Character Studies
Robbie will be reading to me daily from The Beginner's Bible. I will be reading to him from The Children's Book of Virtues as well as several fairy tale books (since most of the stories contain issues of morality and such). He will also be attending AWANA as a Spark.
Reading
When he finishes Learn to Read Second Grade Level 2, Phonics Pathways (and its companion book, Pyramid Reading Exercises, now known as Reading Pathways) will become Robbie's main phonics program. He will also continue working through the Explode the Code series and the McGuffey's Eclectic Readers. Weekly library trips will provide additional books for him to read (since he's pretty much worked his way through our readers).
Other Language Arts
Robbie will continue with All About Spelling and we will be adding in First Language Lessons (Grammar) and Writing with Ease to round out his language arts. His daily D'Nealian handwriting practice will also continue.

UPDATE - RockerDad and I decided to change our science plans. We weren't happy with what we were planning to use, so we ditched it. We will have monthly areas of study with lots and lots of living books and hands-on experiments. We are still hashing things out as I type this, but I think it will be a lot more fun.World Tour
Robbie will be learning about the world by studying land and water forms, the oceans, the continents and select cultures from each of them. We will be reading tons of books, making oodles of crafts and trying new foods along the way.
Music
We will simply have a picture and a small discussion about a composer, genre, artist, band, etc. and listen to it during school for a week. Robbie is also registered for a once per week homeschool music class where he will sing, begin to learn basic theory and play hand drums.
Art
In addition to his daily free art time, we will be studying great works and doing projects from the Usborne Art Treasury. The drawing books are for a bit of additional fun.
Other
I plan to bump up our read-aloud time to fit in many of the wonderful books from both Sonlight's Level A and Ambleside's Year 0. Robbie will be attending classes at our local co-op one day per week, attending homeschool park days and field trips as well as playing seasonal sports with the recreational leagues.

ReplyDeleteMy 11 year old still rereads books from Core A. She's excited for her little sister to get to it next year so she can listen in. lol
I love it. Looks like fun. I love all the books laid out. We used MudPies and Magnents last year and my sons had a great time with it. Wishing you a great year.
ReplyDeleteWhat program did you use to start Robbie with phonics and blending? My son knows the letters and sounds but has trouble blending. Not sure if you have any suggestions from experience.

ReplyDeleteRobbie started blending on his own and then we started using Phonics Pathways. It was a bit boring to him after a while, so we tried Hooked on Phonics K. It worked well for his age (at the time) because the lessons could be so very, very short. I could point you to some resources/ideas, but I was unable to contact you above.
